INSTITUTE OF PHILOSOPHICAL PRACTICES

Mini program: The art of writing
With Oscar Brenifier

Dates: April 9th - 30th, 2025
When: Wednesdays, 7- 9 PM (Paris time)
We invite you to embark on a writing journey to develop writing techniques through the thinking process. Writing should be peaceful, pleasant, and natural. Everyone has ideas and should reflect on various topics every day, or engage in some self-reflection. Putting those ideas into writing is a valuable exercise that helps master oneself, develop self-awareness, and clarify our thoughts. Additionally, it encourages us to engage with our ideas actively, fostering a mindset that promotes intellectual involvement with ourselves.
Dates: April 9th - 30th, 2025
When: Wednesdays, 7 - 9 PM (Paris time)
Duration: 4 sessions of 2 hours (April 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th)
Level: All levels
For whom: Anyone interested in philosophical writing
Price: 200€
About the writing course:

Writing is not merely a formal exercise or requirement, especially when it comes to thinking. It represents the externalization of our thoughts, which can then be observed with distance and greater objectivity. When thoughts remain confined to the mind, they tend to be more chaotic and inchoate, and the thinker is often less aware of their true nature, which can be illusory. Writing them out is, therefore, a challenge: it requires crafting a coherent and meaningful structure, engaging the writer in the process of composition as an art form. Once written, it can also be shared with others, providing an opportunity for fruitful dialogue. However, many people struggle with writing.

Obstacles include:
Procrastination
Erasing
Giving up
Fear
Chronic dissatisfaction
Chaos

Anxiety about mistakes, banality, failure, and external judgment often block the writer's hand and mind.
In this workshop, we will:

  • Discuss and analyze the various obstacles in the practice of writing.
  • Provide techniques and strategies to overcome these difficulties.
Engaging in a collective endeavor will help take the writer out of their solitary anxiety. Each participant will focus on what motivates them, but we will also identify the barriers that inhibit the writing process and explore ways to allow it to flow more freely.

The course will run for 4 weeks, with a weekly 120-minute session and weekly exercises and tasks. You will be encouraged to develop a project and work on it throughout the entire month.
WHAT WE WILL DO:

Learn techniques to enter a writing state
Learn stylistic tools to improve writing
Analyze the psychological reasons behind the main difficulties with writing
Strengthen cognitive skills for writing
Develop the ability to focus and concentrate on an idea
Think in a more flexible way
Develop ideas
Receive daily exercises to make writing a habit

You will learn during this course that writing is not only about producing content, but also about being in a state of mind. Writing requires discipline, being sharp with oneself, and being in a thinking mode.

Writing is a great way to distance ourselves from our ideas, to clarify and externalize what can be chaotic in our minds.
